New NZ CVD primary care 2018 guidelines

In February 2018, the Ministry of Health published a Consensus Statement on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Assessment and Management for Primary Care to update and refresh CVD guidelines. Associate Professor Gerry Devlin and Dr Fraser Hamilton will cover:

  • New ways to assess CVD risk in primary care including new risk categories.
  • New ideas on managing lipids in primary care.
  • New ideas on managing hypertension in primary care.
  • Who needs aspirin for primary care prevention.

Associate Professor Gerry Devlin

Cardiologist

Gerry is an experienced general cardiologist with a special interest in the prevention and management of coronary artery disease, hypertension and heart failure. He is a skilled interventional cardiologist who completed his interventional fellowship in Toronto, Canada. Gerry is also the Medical Director of the National Heart Foundation and Clinical Leader of the New Zealand Cardiac Network. He is an Associate Professor in Medicine with the Waikato Clinical School of the University of Auckland. Gerry is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and moved to New Zealand in 1988. He completed his FRACP in 1995 and is a Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. He became a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology in 2012 and completed his MD thesis with the University of Auckland in 2013. Gerry is a busy clinical researcher with over 90 publications. Research interests include acute coronary syndromes, heart failure and systems of care.

Dr Fraser Hamilton

General Practitioner

Fraser is a General Practitioner in Hamilton, works as a Medical Officer for the Cardiology Clinical Trials Unit at Waikato Hospital and since July 2014 has been the GP Champion for the Heart Foundation.
