Working with gender diverse clients

In the last 10 years there has been a rapid increase in the numbers of people seeking transgender care through health services and it has been estimated that for every 1,000 clients registered in an average GP practice, approximately 10 to 40 clients may identify as gender diverse.

Health professionals who are affirming of people’s gender expression can have a positive impact on wellbeing. The role of hormonal therapies for transgender people is now well established and there is evidence that early medical intervention during puberty for transgender young people has a positive impact on future health and wellbeing outcomes.

Jeannie Oliphant, Sexual Health Physician will address gender diversity and what it means, as well as how to initiate conversations. She will talk about the role and use of hormones, supporting resilience and ongoing support for clients.
