Vitamin D use, and Chest, pelvic and hip injuries in the elderly

Te Whatu Ora presents Te Tiri Whakāro: Sharing Knowledge, a webinar series to support primary care. 

  • Prof. Ben Wheeler will provide an update on vitamin D use in pregnancy, infants, and children. This will include a review of the recently released Ministry guideline on the use of Vitamin D in these populations. Discussion of the ongoing high rates of vitamin D deficiency rickets seen in New Zealand and include guidance on when to test for vitamin D or just commence supplementation.
  • Dr Guy Melrose will focus on chest and pelvic/hip injuries commonly seen in the elderly, often presenting through GP and Urgent Care settings. Practical take-home rules will be provided to aid in appropriate referrals and to prevent missing significant injuries.
  • Clinical updates with Dr Sue Tutty.

Ben Wheeler

Academic Paediatric Endocrinologist

Prof. Ben Wheeler is an academic Paediatric Endocrinologist working for Te Whatu Ora - Southern and the University of Otago. His clinical and research interests include vitamin D and bone health, as well as the use of technology in diabetes, diabetes in youth and emerging adults, and exploring ways to highlight and improve equity in diabetes care.

Guy is an urgent care physician who works clinically in Tauranga.  He is the Director of Professional Development for the Royal New Zealand College of Urgent Care and a Professional Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland within both the Department of General Practice and Primary Care and the Department of Anaesthesiology.
