Trainees in difficulty: Some strategies
Many health professionals have students and trainees in their workplace and may have roles as clinical teachers or supervisors.
What happens when your trainee appears to be struggling?
This session will cover the common ‘presentations’ of a trainee-in-difficulty so that you can more confidently identify that there may be an issue and explore and intervene if needed. Consideration will be given to the common contributors and how to disentangle the complex mixture of ‘competence, conduct or health’, whilst taking account of possible systems issues. We will touch on communication strategies for sensitive conversations, such as talking with a trainee to let them know that you are concerned about their health, or teaching when a trainee is not engaged or appears defensive.
