H.pylori update and faecal immunochemical testing (FIT) for symptomatic pathway

Te Whatu Ora presents Te Tiri Whakāro: Sharing Knowledge, a webinar series to support primary care.
This webinar has a gastroenterology focus the topics will cover:

  • H. pylori Dr Cameron Schaur will be discussing H. pylori, the most common bacterial infection in the world, affecting up to 50% of the world's population.  It is the largest contributor to ethnic inequities in gastric cancer and accounts for more than half of the excess cancer incidence in Māori men and more than two-thirds in Pacific men. He will discuss an update on testing, identification and treatment of H. pylori in primary care, and future directions of population-based management, for which he has also started a PhD via the University of Auckland.
  • FIT for Symptomatic Pathway: Dr John McMenamin and Dr Ralph van Dalen will provide an overview of the FIT for Symptomatic Pathway, which is being implemented in two stages to enhance the assessment of patients with bowel symptoms. The first stage involves the use of the FIT test for those referred for colonoscopy in 5 districts, while the second stage will eventually enable its use directly within primary care. The session will explore how this approach improves the prioritisation of care, addresses capacity challenges, and promotes equitable outcomes for patients with bowel symptoms.
  • Clinical Updates with Dr Sue Tutty.

As always, we will answer as many questions as possible during this session.
